The development of recreation vs. landscape protection and planning

The coming 11th Landscape Architecture Forum will be devoted to problems of landscape designing, planning and protection connected with the development of the recreational function of landscape.

The progress of civilization and the modern way of life result in a need to organize leisure and manage the so-called free time space. At present recreation is one of the major branches of economy, developing dynamically and generating considerable profits. However, the development of the recreational function leads to numerous problems, connected e.g. with the transformation of landscape and threat to nature and cultural resources. For landscape architects this means it is necessary to search for new methods of planning recreational space as well as effective methods to protect endangered resources.

At our forum the object of interest and the topic for discussion will be everyday leisure in the urban environment as well as recreation and tourism in the open landscape. It seems especially important to find answers to the following questions: How to manage leisure space in cities? How to build a necessary compromise between cultural relics and pop-culture creation? How to promote and protect the rural cultural landscape? Is the forgotten heritage a problem or a chance? Is everything for sale? How to establish limits of protection and the scope of landscape transformation? How to utilize for recreational purposes the potential of former mining, industrial areas, or areas no longer used or degraded by intensive agriculture?

Goals of the Forum:

The aim of the Forum is to comprehensively present problems connected with planning recreational landscape, including:
• A discussion on the theoretical foundations and methods of landscape protection and planning,
• Exchange of experiences and presentation of modern directions and trends in landscape architecture,
• Presentation of research results, design and realization concepts.

Thematic groups:
1. Recreation in the city – area design and management.
2. Recreation in the open landscape – landscape protection and planning.
